Art Docent - September 17, 2013
Today was Art Docent day! This program takes place once per six weeks and offers a unique gift to our students by providing them with highly trained and intelligent Art Docent Volunteers that discuss key learning points in art education such as
composition, personal history about the artist's life, world history,
and how to observe the painting and the world around them.
Today our Docents discussed the life and works of Thomas Cole and Winslow Homer, two American artists, while engaging them in an enriching conversation!

Here are a few links to the artists and terminology that were discussed in today's Docent lesson.
6th Grade - Andy Warhol Inspired Pop Art Prints
Students kicked off the semester by reviewing color groups and learning about our featured artist for the lesson, Andy Warhol. We discussed the Pop Art movement in the 1960's and students were introduced to Warhols work in the advertising and art world. Using the primary, secondary, warm, cool, and complementary color groups students made prints of various animals. They began by sketching their animals in their sketchbooks using contour lines. They then redrew their drawings on foam sheets and used washable markers to make mono-prints, prints that can only be made one time, onto absorbent watercolor paper. They are such fast learners and did an incredible job on their first art project of the year!
5th Grade - Pattern Study
Students began the year by learning the elements and principles of art and design. For this particular project the students started by doing a pattern study in their sketchbooks. They then applied them to their project and added a few new patterns along the way. They did a great job coming up with new patterns for this lesson!
